A Strong Woman: Intersection of Race, Religion, and Career in Black Maternal Health
Needs Statement
Psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, social workers, and healthcare professionals in related disciplines need to receive regular updates on advances in neuroscience, psychiatric research, psychotherapy, and the evolving best practices for evaluating, diagnosing, and treating psychiatric disorders. The series aims to improve clinical practice through critical appraisal of psychiatric research, the use of evidence-based treatment approaches, and the integration of multiple treatment modalities to enhance the quality of psychiatric care and improve patient outcomes.
Target Audience
Physicians, fellows, residents, nurses, and other health professionals.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the activity, the participants should be able to:
- Appreciate the historical context of black motherhood in the United States and its implications for maternal morbidity and mortality today.
- Describe the relationship of biopsychosocial risk factors for elevated rates of maternal physical and mental illness in African American women.
- Identify spirituality and career as both a protective and risk factor in the identity of "A Strong Woman" for African Americans.
- Disseminate information on resources and clinical pearls for this population.
