NEEDS STATEMENT

There is a critical need for Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) personnel to improve data literacy and accessibility to leverage the institution's extensive patient, research, and financial data effectively. Limited data literacy and inconsistent access to data resources hinder healthcare providers, researchers, and administrators from fully engaging in data-driven decision-making that could enhance patient care, advance research, and optimize financial outcomes. These issues reveal both a knowledge gap—a need for understanding the available data resources—and a competence gap—the ability to effectively use tools like the Enterprise Data Catalog (EDC) to locate and interpret data. This presentation introduces the Enterprise Data Catalog (EDC), a centralized platform that enables users to search, find definitions, and access comprehensive data reports (restricted to qualified personnel) through the integrated Marketplace. Through practical use cases, this presentation aims to increase data literacy, foster trust in BCM’s data assets, and equip personnel with the competencies necessary for data-informed decisions that enhance patient care and organizational efficiency.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe how metadata within the Enterprise Data Catalog (EDC) enhances the findability, accessibility, and usability of data to support clinical research and decision-making without releasing PHI.
  • Access and utilize data sources within the EDC to support a range of clinical or research projects.
  • Discuss the available data sources within the EDC.
  • Explain the concepts of data lineage and data quality metrics to ensure the reliability, accuracy, and suitability of the data used in clinical research applications. 
  • Demonstrate how to save searches in order to streamline future searches in the Enterprise Data Catalog.

BCM Clinical Investigators including Faculty (PI, MD, PhD), Trainees (Fellow MD, Resident MD, Medical students and Staff (Research Coordinators)
