The Ideal Operating Room Culture, Safety, and Practice

Needs Statement

Surgeons, advanced practice providers, fellows, residents, and medical students in various surgical specialties and subspecialties need to receive regular updates on advances in surgical care and clinical practices. Novel technologies and procedures will be examined as means to improve the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions requiring surgical intervention. The series aims to expand the knowledge of learners, enhance surgical skills, increase surgical efficiency, disseminate surgical best practices, and improve surgical outcomes.

Target Audience

Physicians, medical students, fellows, and residents.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:

  • Acknowledge supervision guidelines, recognize surrogacy rules, describe operative briefings, and demonstrate proper hand-off techniques.
  • Emphasize speaking up, planning for emergencies, and discuss occupational hazards and incivility management.
  • Describe the value of standard operating procedures (SOPs), explain the process of filing intellectual property (IP) and innovating from mistakes, and introduce key concepts like define, measure, analyze, improve, control (DMAIC), Gemba walk, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), and knowledge care pathways.
  • Uphold concepts such as closed loop communication, credentialing and privileging, transparency, cost containment, and consent and disclosure.
