Surgical Treatment of Concomitant Atrial Fibrillation in Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery: Why Are We Not Following the Guidelines?
Needs Statement
Surgeons, advanced practice providers, fellows, residents, and medical students in various surgical specialties and subspecialties need to receive regular updates on advances in surgical care and clinical practices. Novel technologies and procedures will be examined as means to improve the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions requiring surgical intervention. The series aims to expand the knowledge of learners, enhance surgical skills, increase surgical efficiency, disseminate surgical best practices, and improve surgical outcomes.
Target Audience
Physicians, medical students, fellows, and residents.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the session, the participants should be able to:
- Discuss the evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients undergoing mitral valve procedures.
- List the late benefits of treating AF in patients undergoing concomitant surgery.
- Summarize why all patients with AF undergoing any cardiac procedure should have their left atrial appendage excluded.
