Needs Statement

Feedback is recognized as one of the key factors in enabling effective learning in health professionals and is considered a critical component of learner development. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has declared feedback to be an “essential and required” part of training. Effective feedback can be particularly challenging to establish within the emergency department (ED) setting. Providing quality feedback is one of our top goals for improvement over the next year. This workshop is focused on giving verbal feedback with an emphasis that verbal (real-time) should precede written feedback. The focus will be on 3 tangible skill sets which include rapport building, setting and negotiating expectations, and empathic/reflective listening. Most of the workshop will be spent in one of two small groups where participants will have the opportunity to either role-play cases or participate in observation roles where they can practice giving specific feedback. The session will be focused on skill sets that can and should be used for different scenarios, including attending/fellow/resident/app/student, peer-to-peer, and multidisciplinary dyads.

Target Audience 

This activity is for Pediatric Emergency Medicine Faculty, Fellows, and Advanced Practice Providers.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

• Discuss how the definition of “feedback” differs across emergency department clinical encounters.
• Describe the three skill sets that can be utilized for feedback in various emergency department clinical encounters.
• Identify commonly encountered “feedback triggers” in the emergency department setting.
• Practice engaging in non-judgmental delivery of feedback

Evaluation

Evaluation by questionnaire will address program content, presentation, and possible bias.
