Target Audience and Needs
Physicians, fellows, residents, physician assistants, nurses, and advanced nurse practitioners in Pediatrics, Obstetrics-Gynecology, or Neonatology need to receive regular updates about evidence-based practices and advances in the field of perinatal medicine and maternal-fetal medicine. The series aims to expand the knowledge of learners with regard to medical conditions that can affect both mother and child using a multi-disciplinary focus. The series also aims to improve the clinical skills and competencies of learners and their ability to evaluate if treatment recommendations are relevant and evidence-based and would enhance the quality of care and improve patient outcomes.
Educational Methods
Educational methods will include lectures and case presentations.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:
- Evaluate basic and clinical research related to maternal-fetal medicine.
- Examine the ethical issues related to perinatal care.
- Recognize medical conditions that can occur in both mother and the fetus/newborn (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, and infections).
- Develop a management plan for the care of the mother and fetus/newborn.
- Counsel patients about the risks of elective delivery before 39 weeks’ gestation should such delivery be required to treat a fetus.
- Assess whether new recommendations from professional or patient advocacy organizations are evidence-based and relevant and will improve patient care and outcomes.
