Optimizing HPV Vaccination: Improving Communication Through Ethical Principles and Evidence-based Clinical Strategies

Overview

A clinician recommendation plays a critical role in getting parents to accept HPV vaccination for their child. This presentation was developed to support health care providers, nurses, and clinical staff at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Primary Care clinics. It covers the principles of medical ethics and how they apply to HPV vaccination, the importance of HPV vaccination for cancer prevention, organizational approaches to improve HPV vaccine delivery in the clinical setting, and effective strategies to communicate with parents about HPV vaccination.

Target Audience

This CME/CE activity is designed to meet the educational needs of Pediatricians, Registered Nurses, and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses serving adolescent patients in Texas clinics.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Recognize how ethical principles apply to HPV vaccination and parent-provider communication about the HPV vaccine

  • Describe the importance of HPV vaccination for cancer prevention and the rationale for vaccinating all adolescents at ages 11 or 12

  • Apply effective strategies to improve communication with parents about HPV vaccination
