Overview

We aim to provide comprehensive education for healthcare providers on effectively engaging with patients who have undergone psychological trauma, a distinct experience from physical injury trauma. Our goal is to create an environment of safety and trust, ultimately enhancing patients' willingness to pursue healthcare and adhere to treatment plans.

The impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) transcends cultural, age, gender, and socioeconomic boundaries, affecting a diverse spectrum of individuals seeking medical attention. In the midst of their demanding schedules, healthcare professionals must be well-versed in recognizing potential PTSD cases, enabling them to administer empathetic and successful care while also preventing the inadvertent retriggering of trauma.

Target Audience and Needs

This training is for all Primary Care Physicians, OBGYNs, Pediatricians, Residents, Fellows, Psychiatrists, Social Workers, Nurses, Emergency Medicine, and Physicians.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lectures.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

• Identify the signs and symptoms of trauma, along with the importance of trauma-informed care.
• Recognize how stress and trauma can affect various functions of the brain.
• Discuss the significance of the vagus nerve and its role in triggering the automatic flight, fight, or freeze response.
• Discuss real-life examples within a clinical setting that demonstrate manifestations of dissociation.

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
