Needs Statement

A recent needs assessment survey identified a significant opportunity to improve baseline knowledge among clinicians when caring for LGBTQ+ patients, with 55% of respondents reporting inadequate training in this area. Key areas of self-identified knowledge gaps include hormone replacement therapies, trauma-informed care, gender-affirming pre- and post-surgical medical care, and surrogacy. This training will help to improve access to evidence-based care for patients identifying as members of the LGBTQ+ community. Addressing these gaps through accredited continuing medical education (CME) training for a select cohort of primary care physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) will enhance their ability to provide evidence-based, compassionate care to LGBTQ+ patients, ultimately improving healthcare access and outcomes for this population.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the conference, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate inclusive and affirming communication by using appropriate language, pronouns, and terminology when discussing intimate relationships with LGBTQ+ patients.
  • Identify key components of a comprehensive sexual and relationship history that are relevant to LGBTQ+ individuals, including relationship structures, sexual practices, and risk assessments.
  • Recognize the impact of stigma, bias, and past healthcare experiences on LGBTQ+ patients’ willingness to disclose intimate relationship details.
  • Identify and reflect on personal biases that may affect history-taking and describe strategies to mitigate these biases in patient interactions.
