NEEDS STATEMENT

There is a critical need for Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) personnel to improve data literacy and accessibility to leverage the institution's extensive patient, research, and financial data effectively. Limited data literacy and inconsistent access to data resources hinder healthcare providers, researchers, and administrators from fully engaging in data-driven decision-making that could enhance patient care, advance research, and optimize financial outcomes. These issues reveal both a knowledge gap—a need for understanding the available data resources—and a competence gap—the ability to effectively use tools like the Enterprise Data Catalog (EDC) to locate and interpret data. To address these gaps, BCM has implemented the EDC, a centralized platform that enables users to search, find definitions, and access comprehensive data reports (restricted to qualified personnel) through the integrated Marketplace. This educational activity introduces the EDC through practical use cases, with the goal of increasing data literacy, fostering trust in BCM’s data assets, and equipping personnel with the competencies necessary to make data-informed decisions for improved patient care and organizational efficiency.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the key features of the data catalog that enhance findability and usability of data.
  • Explain the difference between data and metadata.
  • Identify and describe at least one data source available in the data catalog.
  • Demonstrate how to effectively use the data catalog search feature to locate relevant data.
