Target Audience
This activity is designed for adult and pediatric neurologists (epileptologists, neuroimmunologists and neurocritical care trained providers), critical care physicians, pediatric rheumatologists, neuro-intensivists, immunologists, and research coordinators who are involved in the diagnosis, management, multidisciplinary care, or clinical research of immune-mediated epilepsy.
Needs Statement
There is a clear need to expand clinician knowledge regarding the pathophysiology, diagnostic criteria, and emerging treatment strategies for immune-mediated epilepsy, particularly for those involved in the diagnosis and management of febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES) and new-onset refractory status epilepticus (NORSE), as current evidence is limited and often unfamiliar to many providers. Competence can be enhanced by applying this knowledge to real-world cases, particularly in initiating timely immunomodulatory and critical care interventions. Performance in clinical practice requires improvement through earlier recognition, better coordination across specialties, neurology, critical care, immunology, genetics, rheumatology, and the consistent use of consensus-driven approaches. This case conference will address these needs by providing case-based learning, integrating current research, and fostering multidisciplinary collaboration to improve patient care and outcomes.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include case presentations, panel discussion, and audience response.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • Describe the clinical features, pathophysiology, and emerging treatment strategies for immune-mediated epilepsy, including the role of immunomodulatory and critical care interventions.
  • Apply evidence-based frameworks and standardized management protocols to evaluate suspected cases of immune-mediated epilepsy, emphasizing early recognition, appropriate diagnostic testing, and multidisciplinary treatment planning.
  • Implement strategies to enhance multidisciplinary coordination among relevant specialties to improve patient care of individuals with immune-mediated epilepsy.
  • Incorporate and translate the latest research findings into clinical decision-making to optimize patient care for individuals with immune-mediated epilepsy.

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
