Needs Statement
Faculty and trainees require structured, recurring opportunities to analyze complications and reflect on contributing factors. These include identifying gaps in clinical knowledge and recognizing systems-level failures such as workflow inefficiencies, communication breakdowns, and the absence of standardized protocols. Through monthly tracking of complications in patients managed by faculty and trainees in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, the series facilitates focused discussions on unusual or severe cases. These sessions foster collaborative learning, enabling faculty to share best practices and guide trainees in evidence-based management. Educational interventions include targeted didactic sessions, development of clinical protocols, and implementation of institutional changes to address recurring issues. The discussions are designed to uncover knowledge and systems-based gaps that may predispose patients to complications or hinder effective treatment. The primary educational outcome is to reduce complication rates through the identification of these gaps and the execution of quality improvement initiatives.
Educational Methods
Educational methods will include case presentations.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:
- Describe the appropriate management of common complications in otolaryngologic surgery.
- Identify patient-specific risk factors, including anatomic anomalies, comorbidities, and disease pathophysiology, that contribute to development of complications during treatment.
- Formulate strategies to reduce the incidence and severity of complications through changes in both individual clinical practice and systems-based approaches.
Evaluation
Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
