Target Audience and Needs

Pediatric critical care physicians, neonatal critical care physicians, pathologists, blood banking specialists, fellows, residents, nurses, and perfusionists who manage children undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) need to receive regular updates on the evidence-based results of clinical studies, advances in ECMO technology, and professional practice guidelines. Given that ECMO research data and educational resources are limited, the series will serve as a forum for ECMO practitioners to expand their knowledge, enhance the quality of ECMO care, and optimize patient outcomes. The series also aims to foster collaborations between team members to evaluate evidence supporting guideline recommendations, implement practice changes, and identify research priorities.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lectures, case presentations, literature review, and panel discussion.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

• Discuss the principles underlying extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
• Distinguish cannulation techniques according to disease type, vascular anatomy, and expected duration of ECMO.
• Demonstrate a greater understanding of the essential components of the coagulation system and how to utilize anticoagulants currently available.
• Identify and apply best practices about patient nutrition during ECMO. 
• Identify and address rehabilitation needs during and after ECMO.
• Recognize and troubleshoot problems that may occur during ECMO.
• Perceive the complexity of decision-making and the ethical considerations surrounding the initiation and termination of ECMO. 

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
