Target Audience and Needs

Anesthesiologists, critical care specialists, advanced practice providers, and healthcare professionals in related disciplines need to receive regular updates on advances in cardiovascular anesthesiology research, professional practice recommendations, and evidence-based treatments.  The series will review the care of patients who have complex medical conditions that can be further complicated by the physiological stress of surgery.  It aims to improve the safety of cardiovascular anesthesiology care by expanding the knowledge of learners, augmenting their diagnostic skills, enhancing the quality of perioperative care, reducing the risk of treatment complications, and improving communication between perioperative team members to optimize patient outcomes.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include case presentations.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • Improve case-based medical knowledge applicable to patient care, such as abnormal anatomic structures, unusual presentations of common conditions, and typical and novel complications of treatment.
  • Analyze the systemic issues contributing to medical errors or treatment complications.
  • Contribute to the institutional quality improvement effort to reduce complications and preventable adverse events.
  • Apply expanded knowledge and skills to improve interprofessional collaborative care and patient outcomes.

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
