Target Audience and Needs
Physicians, residents, fellows, scientists, and other health professionals in general practice specialties such as internal medicine, oncology, surgery, and pathology need to be updated about the practice and implementation of precision medicine initiatives to improve the delivery of targeted and individualized care. Health professionals should be aware of the ethical issues that arise in the practice of precision medicine. Testing for genetically influenced diseases can affect personalized management of individuals and their families.
Educational Methods
Educational methods will include lectures.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:
- Discuss the value and challenges in implementing precision medicine for clinical practice in cancer, and cardiovascular, autoimmune, and neurological diseases.
- Support precision medicine practices through enhanced training in genomics, proteomics, and other high-dimensional assays.
- Explain the fundamentals of precision medicine, the assays used for measurement, and how the results of those assays inform personalized therapy and implement this knowledge in practice.
- Summarize the ethical and legal issues related to precision medicine and determine how those issues affect patients with disparate family genetic histories and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Evaluate the positive results of genetic screening tests for cancer and other hereditary diseases, and design decision support tools to better guide the decision-making of patients with results from precision medicine initiatives including genomics and other multiomics and complex results from imaging or other precise approaches to disease development.
- Discuss patient-centered care and its relevance to decision support with particular emphasis on applications in oncology.
Evaluation
Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
