However, survivors may be at risk for long-term late effects of their treatments with chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and other modalities.  Over time, therapy has been modified to reduce the late effects by using more intensified approaches for those at greatest risk and lessening therapeutic applications where that can be done. However, even survivors treated over the last two decades are at risk may be at risk for serious or life-threatening late effects.

OverviewThe transoral approach to thyroid and parathyroid removal is currently the only surgical option that does not leave a visible cutaneous scar. Additionally, this approach allows access to the bilateral central neck compartments, requires minimal additional instrumentation, and has a complication rate comparable to the traditional open approach. As this is being adapted in North America, endocrinologists, general surgeons and otolaryngologists need to be aware of the procedures risks and benefits.
