Target Audience and Needs

Physicians, fellows, residents, and other trainees in pediatric emergency medicine need to receive regular updates on recent advances in the emergency care of children.  Published studies on the diagnosis and treatment of childhood conditions in the emergency department will be used as an impetus to discuss research methodologies and findings and to model future research projects.  The series aims to expand the knowledge of learners, promote the implementation of evidence-based guidelines in clinical practice, promote research studies in the field, enhance the quality of pediatric emergency care, and improve patient outcomes.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lectures and literature review.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • Formulate a research question in the field of pediatric emergency medicine that is novel and builds on landmark studies.
  • Identify the statistical tests commonly used in landmark studies and interpret the results correctly.
  • Recognize barriers that may prohibit successful completion of a research project.
  • Choose an appropriate method for disseminating the results of a research project (abstract, poster, brief communication, manuscript, etc.).

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
