Target Audience and Needs

Faculty, fellows, and residents in pediatric emergency medicine need to receive regular updates on recent advances in the emergency care of children.  With a unique scope of practice, pediatric emergency medicine encompasses various general and subspecialty disciplines, including pediatrics, surgery, and critical care.  Experts in these disciplines will review professional guidelines and research results related to the stabilization, management, and treatment of acutely ill and injured children as an impetus for discussion.  The series aims to expand the knowledge of learners, promote the implementation of evidence-based guidelines in clinical practice, enhance the quality of pediatric emergency care, and improve patient outcomes.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lectures, case presentations, literature review, and panel discussion.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • Assess and manage pediatric patients with a wide range of acute illnesses and injuries who visit the emergency department.
  • Analyze medical literature pertinent to pediatric emergency medicine and apply evidence-based results to patient care.
  • Apply the skills necessary to practice emergency medicine.
  • Identify and perform procedures that are appropriate for the illness or injury under treatment.
  • Develop strategies to improve compliance with national guidelines concerning the treatment of infants in emergency situations to reduce variations in treatment.

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
