Target Audience and Needs

Physicians, residents, fellows, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners in a pediatric or neonatology specialty need to receive regular updates on advances in neonatal pathophysiology and the clinical management of neonatal morbidities.   The series aims to cover all aspects of perinatal physiology, with rotation of topics on an 18-month cycle.  Participants should be able to discuss the topics presented in general terms, assess the management of ventilated neonates, detect common nutritional issues, manage fluids and electrolytes, and integrate the information reviewed into clinical practice.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lectures and case presentations.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • Apply clinical assessment skills to care for the critically ill and/or premature infant.
  • Evaluate growth failure in premature infants and manage appropriately.
  • Manage fluid and electrolyte problems in the neonate.
  • Integrate the information reviewed in the grand rounds to update knowledge for recertification.
  • Identify deficiencies in the medical knowledge surrounding neonatal morbidities and their pathophysiology.

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
