Needs Statement
Healthcare professionals working in neonatal medicine must actively engage with and apply current evidence to neonatal clinical practice. To do so effectively, learners need expanded knowledge of research methodologies and emerging evidence, along with enhanced competence in literature searching, critical appraisal, and evidence-based discussion. These skills are essential for interpreting study design, assessing validity, and determining the applicability of findings to patient care. This activity supports performance improvement by promoting the integration of current research into clinical decision-making, encouraging updates to practice guidelines, and fostering interprofessional dialogue to advance neonatal care. The journal club format provides a recurring, structured forum for learners to engage with current literature, apply appropriate appraisal techniques, and explore the clinical implications of new evidence.
Educational Methods
Educational methods will include lectures and literature review.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:
- Formulate a structured clinical question (e.g., PICOT format) and conduct a structured literature search using available tools, such as PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and evidence-based neonatology resources.
- Identify and interpret key components and methods used in various clinical research designs, including observational studies, randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses.
- Apply critical appraisal techniques to assess the methodology, validity, and relevance of neonatal research articles, and evaluate their potential impact on clinical practice.
- Present selected research articles that address a clinical question encountered in practice, facilitate interprofessional discussions, and assess the generalizability of findings to local practice settings.
- Summarize and incorporate emerging findings from appraised literature into clinical decision-making and practice improvement within the neonatal care environment.
Evaluation
Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
