Target Audience and Needs

Physicians, fellows, residents, medical students, nurses, and nurse practitioners in a pediatric or neonatology specialty need to review complex cases with an ethicist to resolve challenging issues in neonatal care and to discern an ethical approach to treatment of critically ill neonates when continued care is questionable.  The series aims to expand the knowledge of learners about the role of ethics in clinical decision-making, encourage learners to apply ethical principles in clinical practice, enhance the quality of neonatal care, and improve patient outcomes when possible.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lectures, case presentations, and panel discussion.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

• Identify the role that ethics should play in the decision-making process in the complex neonatal patient with life-threatening conditions.
• Inform both the general pediatrician and the pediatric subspecialist of ethical concepts that must be examined as fiduciary of the patient.
• Incorporate ethical principles into the daily care of ill neonates to improve the care provided to those infants.
• Develop strategies to address the medical, ethical, and legal issues that affect treatment decisions in the NICU.
• Recognize the need for and utilize the hospital ethics consultation service.

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
