Series Director

Michael E. Speer, MD

Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, residents, fellows, physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in the fields of pediatrics, obstetrics, pediatric surgery, perinatology, and family medicine.
Needs Statement

To address the identified practice gaps in the management of neonatal acute respiratory care, there is a need to strengthen clinician knowledge and decision-making across a range of advanced support strategies. This educational activity will feature case-based presentations that explore real-world scenarios involving escalation of respiratory support, including high-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), high-frequency jet ventilation (HFJV), and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and the criteria guiding these interventions, particularly in vulnerable preterm populations. Sessions will also examine approaches to managing pulmonary hypertensive crises and improving nutritional support during ECMO, with attention to emerging practices. Each case will include key learning points, discussion of alternative strategies, and post-session surveys to assess knowledge retention and inform potential changes in clinical practice.

Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lectures and case presentations.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • State the incidence and survival trends of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) use in neonates.
  • Review clinical management strategies before and during ECMO, including ventilatory and pharmacologic interventions.
  • Identify characteristics and criteria for veno-arterial or veno-venous ECMO candidacy in preterm neonates.
  • Formulate comprehensive strategies for managing acute respiratory failure by incorporating ventilatory strategies and the use of vasoactive medication and pulmonary hypertensive medication.

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
