Target Audience and Needs

Baylor College of Medicine physicians, fellows, residents, medical and allied health students, and other healthcare providers need to maintain their professionalism while managing a large patient workload, treating patients with chronic illnesses and comorbidities, and working within fiscal constraints.  Simulated cases and decision-making encounters will be used as an impetus to discuss the personal attributes, behaviors, and commitments that are essential to maintain professionalism in day-to-day practice. The series aims to demonstrate the importance of interprofessional relationships, collaborations between disciplines, consistency in conduct, and refinement of communication skills to enhance the quality of healthcare overall and improve patient outcomes.


Educational Methods

Educational methods will include lectures.


Objectives

At the conclusion of the sessions, the participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the personal attributes, commitments, behaviors, interactions, and other factors that are important to the development and maintenance of physician professionalism.
  • Refine communication skills and demonstrate professional empathy when interacting with patients.
  • Improve working relationships with colleagues within the healthcare team to share perspectives and overcome challenges.
  • Recognize the signs and consequences of personal and professional burnout.
  • Explain why professionalism requires consistency and day-to-day practice to build a lifelong career.

Evaluation

Participants may be asked to complete a session evaluation.
